LONDON, June 19 (Xinhua) — Britain recorded its hottest day of the year on Thursday as an amber heat health alert was issued across England.
According to the Met Office’s latest forecasts, much of the south of England has seen temperatures rise to between 31 Celcius and 32 Celcius by Thursday afternoon.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the amber heat health alert for the whole of England until Monday morning, warning that increased pressures on health and social care services are likely.
The agency also warned there could be “a rise in deaths” among people with pre-existing health conditions and those aged over 65.
Regional fire services also issued warnings about water safety amid the high temperatures.
According to the Met Office, the temperature could rise even higher as the week progresses, with the heat peaking on Sunday. ■
