LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – With thousands of people expected to attend London’s Red, White & Boom celebration this Saturday, local police are urging attendees to plan ahead and take safety precautions.
The free, family-friendly event kicks off at 4 p.m. at the College Park campus, located behind the Laurel County Public Library and Somerset Community College.
Festivities will include food trucks, inflatables, games, contests, live music and Southeastern Kentucky’s largest fireworks display, set to begin around 9:45 p.m.
The London Police Department says drivers should expect delays on Highway 192 and plan for heavy foot traffic throughout the evening. Officers will be directing parking based on vehicle type, and a designated drop-off zone will be available.
With high temperatures forecasted, police are reminding people to stay cool and stay safe.
“Hydrate even a couple days prior so that fluid can be in your system,” said Officer Hobie Daugherty with the London Police Department. “It’s always a good idea, especially in large venues like we’re going to have, if you have children or anybody that could be separated from your family, take a picture of them as you arrive to the event.”
First responders will be on-site throughout the event, and a command post will be set up to help reunite lost children with their families or respond to other emergencies.
