Reports during the week have suggested Williams has informed The Wire of his desire to return to the NRL, with the Dolphins reportedly leading the chase for his signature.
The club captain is contracted to the club until the end of next year and the reports have suggested he is unwilling to extend that deal, prompting talk Warrington may choose to cash in on the England skipper at the end of this season.
After confirming he would “100 per cent” remain at the club until at least the end of 2025, however, Williams admits things beyond then remain up in the air.
“I’m not too sure,” he said when asked by Sky Sports about whether he would be at The Halliwell Jones Stadium for 2026 having been named player of the match in the crucial victory over Hull FC.
“I’m committed to the team – I love the team, I’m captain of the team and nobody can doubt my commitment, but there’s a lot of logistics to go yet. I’m committed to Warrington.”
Williams did not deny there had been interest from Australia in his services and admitted he was “open-minded” about where his future lies.
He insisted, however, that any discussions on the subject with his current club have been “honest” and “respectful.”
“I’ve spoken to the club and there’s been a lot of talk throughout the week,” he said.
“There’s nothing major to it – there’s a little bit of interest and I’d be stupid not to listen to it at my age. I’m 30 now so it’s now or never.
“It’s something I’ve got to think about – whether it’s an itch I want to scratch.
“Warrington have been brilliant – I’ve been respectful to them, told them my honest thoughts and what will be, will be.
“There’s a lot of logistics around it but the minute, I’m open-minded.”
Head coach Sam Burgess also insisted his captain was “extremely committed” to Warrington for however long he remains at the club.
“There’s a lot of speculation around George at the moment, but one thing I can say about George is that he’s extremely committed,” he told Sky Sports ahead of this afternoon’s game.
“He’s our captain here and he’s just been a wonderful bloke to have around.
“Everything that’s going on in the background, we’ll just leave that alone.
“He’s trying to get his best performance on the field and get our team moving forward. That’s all I’ve got to say about Georgie.”
In his post-match press conference after the game, he added: “There’s always speculation with George but with what you saw from him tonight, I think he’ll continue to grow through the back end of the season.
“What I would say about George is that he’s such a competitor and an awesome guy to have around.
“Whatever happens happens with George but for us, I know I’m going to get the best version of him as he’s so committed to the group.
“I played with George so I’m good mates with him and I can be honest with him, so we’ve done that.”
