It’s been just under two months since Hull City decided to sack Ruben Selles, and plenty has changed in the Championship since then.

At the start of June, Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United tenure came to an end allowing the former Tigers boss to move in and take the hotseat at Bramall Lane.

With the Spaniard now settled in at his new job in South Yorkshire, progress has started in the transfer window, with the Blades already announcing a new signing – although they have seemingly missed out on Jimmy Dunne after he signed a new deal at QPR.

Nevertheless, Sheffield United are a relatively unknown proposition heading into the new season, and Selles has reflected on his sacking by Hull.

The Tigers avoided relegation on the final day of the season in 2024/25, with Matt Bloomfield slamming his Luton Town players following their 5-3 defeat to West Bromwich Albion as that loss sent the Hatters to League One.

Having completed the task that he was brought in to do, many expected Selles to continue with Hull, but he has now explained his reaction to being sacked by the club.

He said (via: Hull Live): “Yes, it was a surprise, at the time, because obviously everyone wanted to get the job done (safety) a little bit earlier, and we all agreed (with the board).

“I think we did more than enough with the average of points, with the way that we do things, to just keep the club in the category (Championship earlier). Even on that final day, the way that we managed the team and the way that the team behaved, it was top. It was knowing exactly what to do every single moment, just to get the target on our side.

“I was surprised (about leaving), but, as I always say, there are non-controllables in your life that you have nothing to say sometimes, and that was the case, so the club decided to move forward and then try to find a new manager. We accepted that and tried to move forward.”

Sheffield United’s new manager will be looking to hit the ground running

Selles has perhaps not had the most glittering start to life in management in England, having taken charge of a struggling Southampton side, a Reading team that were facing financial issues and then joining Hull while they were towards the bottom of the Championship.

However, he has now taken over a club who are coming off the back of play-off heartbreak and expectations will be for the Blades to be pushing for a top two spot in the new campaign.

Selles shored up Hull defensively during his short time in Humberside and this will go a long way at Sheffield United as they look to get over the disappointment of Wembley in May.
