Birmingham City are being credited with a last minute swoop to sign Bright Osayi-Samuel as a free agent after an expected move to Besiktas fell through.

Nigeria right-back Osayi-Samuel, aged 27, had been expected to be unveiled at Besiktas imminently after spending the last four-and-a-half seasons at Fenerbahce, including the last one under Jose Mourinho as they finished second in Super Lig.

But the Turkish media has been stunned by a sudden breakdown and all of a sudden it is being reported that Birmingham could be his destination instead. Blues’ transfer activity is expected to ramp up now that clubs are reporting back for pre-season.

Osayi-Samuel came through the junior ranks at Blackpool and then built his reputation with Queens Park Rangers, who he joined in 2017 and made 115 appearances for over the next three-and-a-half years.

He has won the Turkish Cup since moving to Fenerbahce and he has been a regular either on the right of defence of further forward. He has occasionally played on the left too. He is particularly known for his speed.

It has previously been claimed this summer that he is wanted by Crystal Palace and West Ham and he has apparently turned down a new contract at his current club as well as had that interest from Besiktas.

Reports are also gathering pace about Blues’ pursuits of James Beadle, Tommy Doyle and Demarai Gray.
