Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are set to reignite their family feud with a rematch this September at an as-yet undisclosed location in London.
Following their enthralling encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April, Eubank Jr emerged victorious with a unanimous decision.
Their initial clash brought back vivid memories of the intense rivalry between their fathers, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, which began 35 years ago.
The sons’ April bout did not disappoint, echoing the fiery intensity of their fathers’ legendary duels from thirty years prior.
While Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is once again being considered for the event, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has hinted that Wembley could be in the running to accommodate the larger audience expected for the rematch.
Speaking to Ring magazine, Hearn said: “Spurs is contracted – it’s a fantastic stadium and it worked extremely well the first time.”
He added: “Obviously, it was sold out and this fight’s even bigger, so you could possibly look at Wembley to increase the capacity.”
Details regarding the weight limit for the upcoming bout remain unconfirmed. Meanwhile, Eubank Sr has openly criticised the British Boxing Board of Control and Matchroom for sanctioning the first fight at the middleweight limit of 160lbs.
Eubank Sr has expressed concern over his son’s health, stating that fighting at 160lbs caused dangerous dehydration for Eubank Jr, who typically competes at 175lbs. Prior to their first match, Benn had never fought above the super-welterweight class of 154lbs.
Eubank Sr has lashed out, airing his grievances on his YouTube channel: “If the Boxing Board of Control do not do what they are supposed to do, which is to block fights from happening which do not abide by the weights and the rules. You are baboons!”.
The initial bout between the two fighters was set to take place in October 2022 but faced a delay when Benn was found positive for the banned substance comifene, resulting in his suspension.
Benn refuted claims of intentional doping, and his ban was subsequently lifted following a verdict from the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP).
An independent inquiry into Benn’s adverse drug test suggested that “highly elevated consumption” of eggs might have been responsible, a detail spotlighted during a press conference for their first scheduled fight when Eubank threw an egg at Benn amidst a heated exchange of insults.
