One loud bang was followed closely by another as both towers fell to the ground in a cloud of dust.

The crowd could be heard clapping and cheering as debris flew into the air.

Dust covered nearby streets, with residents having to cover their noses and mouths while outside.

The flats were demolished to make way for 150 new homes after fire safety concerns were raised about cladding and timber balconies.

Bosses announced plans to demolish the blocks two years ago with the cost running to £6.5million.

Teams working from platforms have been seen removing materials from the buildings which contain a total of 276 flats.

They will be replaced with social housing.

Tenants were moved out in 2021 due to the risks posed by flammable building materials which were too costly to replace.

The towers were built in 1971 and were nestled between St Francis’ Primary School and the Southern Necropolis cemetery.

Earlier this year, three major tower blocks in Glasgow were demolished by explosives, transforming the city’s skyline.

Huge crowds gathered in front of the doomed block of flats in Wyndford, Maryhill, as the country’s biggest demolition project got underway.

They watched as the 26-storey towers were brought down shortly after midday.

A fourth high-rise block was also torn down but with a piece-by-piece demolition technique rather than explosives.
