Sewage dumping in Cramond
The Scottish Liberal Democrats are deep in sewage matters this week, revealing that there are 12 sewage overflow sites deemed by regulator Scottish Water to be at risk of sewage being dumped there in dry weather – and two are in Cramond.
Environmental Standards Scotland have issued a report listing the 12 sites, while Liberal Democrats are calling for a Clean Water Act updating the Victorian sewage network, monitoring all sewage dumping, establishing a blue flag system for rivers in Scotland and a ban on release of sewage in protected areas – for example where people go swimming.
Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton said: “I am very concerned to see that within my own constituency of Cramond there are two sites at risk of dumping sewage in dry weather. Cramond is a hugely popular beauty spot, but sewage dumping makes it so much harder for people to come and enjoy the area.
“Dry spilling is especially dangerous to the environment because sewage discharges will not have been diluted by rainwater. To make matters worse, Environmental Standards Scotland say this figure is actually an underestimate.
“The government must urgently assess the scale of the problem- the public deserve to know the full picture about this disgusting practice.
“The SNP keep turning a blind eye to the sewage problem, letting down residents and endangering the environment.
“To turn the tide on this scandal, Scottish Liberal Democrats have published plans for a Clean Water Act that would end the excuses, get tough on sewage dumping and protect our rivers, lochs and beaches long into the future.”

Eye Pavilion reopens
The Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion has now fully reopened to patients. The hospital was temporarily closed in Autumn 2024 to enable urgent repair work to be carried out.
The return of services, which began in early June, has been carefully managed over a number of weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
Michelle Carr, Chief Officer, Acute Services, NHS Lothian, said: “Moving our range of diagnostic and treatment equipment, microscopes, ophthalmoscopes and devices for measuring eye pressure, along with all the lenses and instruments that our healthcare staff require for the many and varied eye conditions that individual patients may present with is nothing short of a mammoth task.
“Our teams have worked tirelessly, planning for the return of services and the reopening of the building. I would like to thank them for their professionalism and ongoing commitment to patient care.”

This is something I’ve worked towards for many years, and to finally see it become a reality feels amazing.
“I couldn’t have done this without the unwavering support of my family, friends, and the incredible staff at British Curling. I’m so excited to take in the full Olympic experience and give it everything I’ve got!”
