Irish language rap group Kneecap have announced they will perform on the main stage at Electric Picnic in August.

The festival, which takes place from August 29 – 31 at Stradbally Estate, Co Laois confirmed the addition.

“This is going to be a special one,” the organisers posted on social media.

It comes after the west Belfast group performed at Glastonbury over the weekend.

Avon and Somerset Police said on Saturday that they are assessing videos of comments made by the Belfast rap trio, as well as punk duo Bob Vylan, during their performances at the festival.

Taking to the West Holts stage Kneecap led the crowd in chants of “Free Mo Chara and f*** Keir Starmer” during their set, while also thanking the organisers for not bowing to pressure to cancel their performance.

Appearing on stage before the Belfast trio, rapper Bobby Vylan, of rap punk duo Bob Vylan, led crowds on the festival’s West Holts Stage in chants of: “Free, free Palestine” and: “Death, death to the IDF”.

The comments by Bobby Vylan have been condemned and the BBC has expressed regret at not pulling the live stream of the performance.

Glastonbury Festival itself also condemned the chants by Bob Vylan, saying in a statement on Sunday they were “appalled by the statements” made on stage.

After performing several tracks, the band addressed the crowd, referencing Mo Chara’s appearance in court earlier this month.

The charge sparked widespread political and public debate, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stating it would be “inappropriate” for the group to perform at Glastonbury.
