Dozens of prisoners have been temporarily moved out from Liverpool’s main prison, the Ministry of Justice has today confirmed. A temporary power outage has affected A Wing at HMP Liverpool in Walton.

The power outage first affected A Wing at the facility, commonly referred to locally as Walton Prison, on Sunday June 29. There are a total of 89 prisoners on the wing and just under half that number – 41 – have been removed from the prison following then outage.

A Prison Service Spokesperson told the ECHO: “A temporary power failure on A-wing at HMP Liverpool has necessitated the relocation of around 40 prisoners as a precaution while repairs are underway.

“We’re working urgently to restore full services and return these prisoners.”

It is understood that following the power problems, replacement parts have been ordered and repairs are expected to be carried out later this week.

The 41 prisoners are being temporarily removed as a precaution. Some will remain at HMP Liverpool in other areas.

Others will be moved to other prison establishments, elsewhere in the country.

It is understood that essential lighting remains on at the wing, however some in-cell services are currently unavailable.

The loss of power has also affected the wing’s servery and medication unit.

Those who have been temporarily decanted will return to HMP Liverpool’s A-wing once power is fully restored.

HM Prison Liverpool is a local prison for remand and sentenced adult males from across Merseyside.

A-wing is one of eight wings at HMP Liverpool.

The prison was constructed between 1848 and 18555 and replaced a smaller facility in the centre of the city that had become too small for requirements.
