Leeds United are sitting top of the Championship table again, five points clear of Sheffield United in third.

Although the Whites had a recent dip in form, Daniel Farke’s men seem to be back on track and are well on course for promotion to the Premier League

Farke is now thinking ahead to the summer transfer window too, with his former captain Julian Weigl already on the agenda at Elland Road.

Regardless of where Leeds find themselves next season, Farke will be keen to strengthen immediately, if he isn’t sacked for failing again, which looks unlikely.

With several exits from Elland Road already being mooted, the manager will surely be putting minds at rest that Leeds will be ready to replace anyone who leaves.

Sky Sports Germany’s Marlon Irlbacher has reported that Farke is keen on a move for Weigl, who is now captain at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The two parties are said to have maintained good contact since Farke left the German club, and Leeds have inquired whether the 29-year-old will be available in the summer transfer window.

However, there have been no formal talks between the two sides yet, and the defensive midfielder is said to be comfortable in Germany.

It’s stated that a move to Elland Road would only be on the cards if Leeds were to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Given Weigl is under contract with Gladbach until 2028 and is one of the top earners at his current club, this could prove to be an ambitious move from the West Yorkshire outfit.

Leeds United promotion is vital

Leeds are pushing harder than ever to achieve promotion to the Premier League, with the importance felt by the hierarchy, the boss and the supporters.

However, this proves exactly why a return to the top flight is so vital for the progression of the West Yorkshire side going forward, starting with the expansion of Elland Road and new signings.

Weigl will only be willing to make the move to reunite with Farke if it makes him a Premier League player and given there are names such as Evan Ferguson and Nick Pope also on the target list, a huge summer could be ahead.

The 49ers will be prepared to splash the cash to offer the best chances of survival in the Premier League, but if they fail to achieve their aims this term, the reality of who they can aim for will suffer greatly.
