An Edinburgh group celebrates 10 years of human towers this weekend

The Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh, a group that builds castells – human towers that are a vibrant tradition from Catalonia- is celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend.

Castells are recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh will celebrate its 10th anniversary joined by the Castellers of London on the 5th of July. There will be a free performance at 11AM at the Mound Precinct (in the case of rain this will be moved to St Peter’s Hall), followed by a ticketed event organised by the Centre Català d’Escòcia at St Peter’s Hall, where paella will be sold by Lovely Paella from 1pm and family-friendly activities run from 2pm, and rounded off with a concert by the Catalan Folk band “la Cosina” at 7pm at Cabaret Voltaire.

The Colla Castellera d’Edinburgh will be attempting six-level human towers, first achieved on home turf at this years’ Meadows Festival. These towers, measuring approximately 7 metres in height and weighing over half a ton, represent dedication, strength, trust, and teamwork.
