Food manufacturer Bakkavor has delivered a major boost to workplace wellbeing across its Somerset and Wiltshire sites, with all 169 managers at its Highbridge and Devizes facilities completing Mental Health Awareness Training as part of a company-wide commitment to supporting colleagues’ health.

The training, delivered over 20 sessions, saw 87 managers in Highbridge and 82 in Devizes take part in comprehensive workshops designed to improve understanding of mental health, build confidence in supporting colleagues, and promote a more open and supportive workplace culture.

In addition, all colleagues at both sites have completed ‘All Colleague Mental Health Awareness’ training, ensuring a consistent level of awareness across the workforce.

The initiative is part of Bakkavor’s national wellbeing strategy, which focuses on physical, emotional, and financial wellbeing. The company has also partnered with charities including Samaritans and GroceryAid to provide additional support and resources.

Locally, the Highbridge and Devizes teams have gone above and beyond with a series of practical and engaging wellbeing events, including:

  • Launch of a new outdoor rest area in Devizes, with one planned for Highbridge
  • The UK’s first Menopause Café at the Devizes site
  • Discounted gym memberships for Highbridge staff, following a visit from Sutton Moore Sports Centre
  • Community walks and a 20-mile sponsored walk by the Highbridge team for Weston Hospicecare
  • Guest talks from local councils on healthy lifestyles and work-life balance
  • Access to a DigiCare app offering digital GP appointments, mental health consultations, and nutritionist support
  • On-site physiotherapy and occupational health services for musculoskeletal and general wellbeing support

Natasha Whitehouse, Senior HR Business Partner at Bakkavor Desserts, said: “We are a people business, and we are committed to looking after the wellbeing of our colleagues. Whether it’s a community walk or a quick chat, it’s all about connection, engagement and communication.”

The efforts have been supported by a growing team of Wellbeing Champions, who have helped raise awareness and signpost services in a friendly, approachable way.

Final fundraising totals for GroceryAid are still being confirmed, but the impact on morale and team spirit is already being felt across both sites.
