Tuesday (8th July) marked the beginning of the French state visit to the UK, with President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron touching down at RAF Northolt to kick off their three-day visit.
This event marks a historic moment as the first state visit from a French president since 2008 and the first visit by a European Union leader since Brexit. Anticipation is high for discussions on various topics including strategies to curb small boat crossings of the Channel during Macron’s exchange with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The morning air was buzzing with excitement as the plane doors swung open at Royal Airforce base, revealing President Macron and Brigitte ready to begin their engagements as they were greeted by the ambassador of the French Republic, Helene Duchene.
Also awaiting their arrival were Prince William and Princess Kate, who were also standing by the aircraft to extend a warm welcome on behalf of King Charles. The president exchanged a hearty handshake with Prince William, maintaining a friendly grip on his arm, before extending an air kiss to Princess Kate’s hand.

Photographs from this diplomatic encounter quickly made it to social media, prompting both Royal fans and experts to share their insights.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams expressed his perspective on the matter, as he took to X to say: “The Prince and Princess of Wales meet French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte at RAF Northolt as the state visit begins. The RF play a pivotal role in soft power diplomacy.”
Other royal fans were also quick to notice Princess Kate’s diplomatic fashion choices hidden within her pink ensemble.
The Princess of Wales donned a chic outfit from the French fashion house Christian Dior, complete with a coordinating hat by Jess Collett. The standout piece was the Christian Dior jacket, specifically the 30 Montaigne Rose Des Vents Bar Jacket from their 2024 collection.
Maria Grazia Chiuri reimagined this jacket, drawing inspiration from the original design by the legendary Christian Dior in 1947.

But the diplomatic nods didn’t stop with her attire; Kate’s accessories also paid homage to beloved late royals. She adorned herself with earrings that once graced Princess Diana and a pearl necklace from Queen Elizabeth’s personal collection.
Fans were effusive in their praise for Kate’s thoughtful outfit details. “Aren’t they sublime?” gushed one admirer, while another simply exclaimed “wow”.

Following their encounter with the Prince and Princess of Wales, President Macron and Brigitte were escorted to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla, who will later host them at Windsor before a significant speech.
A state banquet is scheduled for Tuesday evening. Additionally, the French president and his wife also plan to pay their respects to the late Queen as they plan to visit her gravesite during their Windsor visit.
