The usually bustling city centre branch has been closed this weekThe popular Greggs on Old Hall Street in Liverpool city centre has been closed for most of this week
For those living and working in Liverpool city centre’s bustling business district, concerns have been growing this week. That’s because the workers and residents of the area have been unable to access their beloved Greggs bakery.
The Old Hall Street branch of Greggs is usually packed with office workers ordering breakfast barms and cups of coffee before starting their day. Then, as lunchtime arrives, large queues are frequently seen snaking out of the shop’s large wooden front doors as those same workers hunt for delicious baked goods to get them through the rest of the day.
Alas, this has not been the case this week and instead of being its typical hive of activity, the Greggs store has represented something much quieter – with those same big wooden doors firmly shut since at least Tuesday.
With many office staff (including those in our nearby office) left bereft by this sudden and unexpected loss of a favourite lunch spot, the ECHO has been endeavouring to find out why our access to steak bakes and cheese and onion pasties has been restricted.
We have tried on multiple occasions to contact the press team for Greggs to find out the reason for the closure – and most importantly, when the bakery will reopen again.
Unfortunately, despite these repeated requests, we have yet to receive a firm answer on this.
We also asked Liverpool City Council whether they had any information on the sudden closure of the premises, but they did not.

The closure of the Old Hall Street branch of Greggs means that those still keen to enjoy all the famous bakery brand has to offer will currently have to make do with one of the 22 other branches the city has to offer.
And at the now especially busy Castle Street branch, one customer was told by staff of the reason for the closure and the date those big brown doors should be swinging open once again.
The staff member said they believed that maintenance work was being carried out on the building, which required it to close for a temporary period.
But do not fear, that same customer was told that all being well, the Old Hall Street home of baked goods should be open to the public once again on Monday.
And if there is any doubt of how that news will be greeted amongst the business district faithful, well the staff member reported that people had been banging on the doors of the shut-down branch.
Greggs was contacted for a response.
