Sean Longstaff has responded to Newcastle United teammate Bruno Guimaraes on social media after he saw Leeds United’s latest bid to sign him rejected by the Magpies earlier this week.

Newcastle academy graduate Longstaff has been a part of the club’s senior set-up since his breakthrough under Rafael Benitez back in 2018, as he made his Premier League debut against Liverpool in December of that year.

The box-to-box midfielder has often been a back-up player at St James’ Park since Eddie Howe took charge nearly four years ago, and at 27-years-old, he is believed to be open to a move away this summer to be a more regular starter elsewhere.

Football Insider revealed in May that Everton were interested in Longstaff, with sources previously telling Football Insider that with Newcastle keen to sell off several fringe players and boost their PSR position this summer

Newly-promoted Leeds United were revealed to be tracking Longstaff by Football Insider in June, but a deal to take the 27-year-old to the Whites has proved harder to complete than many would have expected.

The 27-year-old is back in Magpies training for pre-season, as shown by his recent Instagram stories, but the same cannot be said for his midfield teammate Bruno Guimaraes, who has likely been given an extended break due to international duty with Brazil, as he took to the site on Thursday (10 July) to share a post of him out fishing with his family while he rests ahead of the new campaign, saying: “Experiência incrível com amigos e família!!!” which translates to “Amazing experience with friends and family!!!”

Longstaff moved to leave a like on Guimaraes’ message, while the likes of Alan Shearer, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Lewis Miley and fellow exit-linked Newcastle man Joe Willock all followed suit.

Newcastle should sell Longstaff if Leeds offer £15m

Football Insider verdict

There is always going to be sentiment involved when it comes to Longstaff and Newcastle, given that he is a local lad who has risen up their ranks to be a regular in the Premier League for his boyhood club.

With that said, there is little room for such emotion in football nowadays, especially in the Magpies’ current position as they look to navigate the transfer market smartly to give themselves the best chance of success in the Champions League next season.

Longstaff is undoubtedly a solid squad option for Howe to have at his disposal, but his struggle for minutes last term should mean that he wants to depart for increased game-time, while Newcastle should also feel that they can upgrade on him going forward.

Longstaff’s Newcastle career record

The Tyneside club have been linked with a move for Conor Gallagher, who would be an instant improvement on Longstaff and add much more European and international experience to their squad.

Leeds, meanwhile, are right to look to sign the 27-year-old, but their haggling over the fee could mean that they miss out, with other clubs surely waiting in the wings to snap him up for £15m if that is the figure that Newcastle are happy to sell him for.
