620 artists and 90 institutions in Austria have signed an open letter calling on ORF not to cut cultural broadcasting to finance the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.
Under the title ‘Kein Wegsparen von ORF–Kulturnachrichten und ORF-Kulturprogrammen’ (No Cutting Back on ORF Cultural News and ORF Cultural Programs), writers, musicians, festival officials and others from the creative arts, have written to ORF to demand that no cuts be made to ORF’s cultural programming to enable the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 to be held in Austria.
The campaign comes at a time when ORF is having to make financial savings due to increased budget pressures, but also find funds to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. ORF has stated it will cancel some programs and delay others to enable it to host the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Director General Roland Weißmann responded to the letter stating that ORF remains “the most reliable partner of the domestic arts and culture scene”, with the broadcaster airing over 500 hours of cultural content this summer.
