A woman who died after falling at a waterfall beauty spot has been named locally as Betty Molloy.

Emergency services were called to Campsie Glen in East Dunbartonshire, north of Glasgow, at around 12.35pm on Saturday, July 12.

The 63-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Record understands she fell 35ft after she “lost her footing”.

The incident unfolded on Scotland’s hottest day of the year as people flocked to beauty spots across the country to enjoy the weather.

Pictures from the scene on Saturday showed the area swarming with police vehicles, ambulances and fire engines, with responders seen gathering in the car park of the beauty spot. The area was cordoned off by police officers.

Tributes have been paid to Betty in the wake of the tragedy.

Eileen Dolan said: “Thoughts and prayers to Betty’s family. This is an absolute tragedy. RIP Betty.”

Mary Young added: “RIP Betty, you were such a lovely lady, thinking of all your family and friends.”

Pearl O’Donnell said: “RIP Betty, thoughts with the family. This is an absolute tragedy.”

Police Scotland said that inquiries remained ongoing into the circumstances.

It’s not the first time there has been similar incidents at the beauty spot on recent years. Just last year, a hiker plummeted 25ft at the waterfall on July 17.

Police, Mountain Rescue teams, HM Coastguard and the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) all attended and the injured hiker was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment.

A person was also airlifted to hospital after falling 15ft into the Scots gorge in May 2022. While 39-year-old woman died after falling from rocks Clachan of Campsie area in July 2018 and anbother woman was left seriously injured in the same incident.

The tragic fall at Campsie Glen wasn’t the only incident that happened as Scotland was gripped by a heatwave over the weekend as temperatures soared to 32C.

The body of a 15-year-old boy was pulled from a river in Glasgow following a major search operation. Crews received reports of a person in the water at 6.40pm, at the River Kelvin near Maryhill Road in Maryhill on July 12.

Tragically, the body of the teenager was found around five hours later.

The body of a 39-year-old man was also found in the River Tyne at Haddington in East Lothian.

While a 50-year-old man was pulled from the water at Loch Lomond and was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he died on Sunday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson previously said: “Around 12.35pm on Saturday, 12 July, 2025, police received a report a 63-year-old woman had fallen near Campsie Glen Waterfall Car Park.

“Emergency services attended and the woman died at the scene. Her family is aware and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Emergency services remain in attendance.”
