Hull FC have another injury to a key player, and coach John Cartwright has to look at his options once again.
Amir Bourouh failed his HIA in their victory over Wakefield Trinity on Thursday night and will now miss the Black and Whites’ game against Wigan Warriors on Saturday afternoon. Adding insult to injury is the fact that Bourouh was also handed a one-game ban meaning he would have missed the game anyway, regardless of failing his HIA.
Bourouh has settled into the Hull side well since his arrival in the off-season, becoming one of their most consistent performers.
However, with him out for the next week or so, Hull are looking at their options for who will play in the number nine spot.
Here are four options for John Cartwright to look at when looking for a replacement for Bourouh.
Four options at hooker for Hull FC boss Cartwright to look at
Cade Cust
Cust was originally brought in as a replacement half/hooker and given the fourteen shirt. However, with Jordan Abdull out of the door before the season started and the injury to Will Pryce in recent weeks, Cust has moved into the halves alongside captain Aidan Sezer. With Pryce out still for at least another month or so, Cust could stay at stand-off, but is the most likely to move to hooker.
Jack Charles
The 19-year-old has made just three appearances off the bench so far in 2025, following two pre-season injuries. He’s been replacing Bourouh in those games, moving between hooker and halfback whenever Hull have brought him onto the field. He’s arguably better in the halves as it’s his preferred position. However, it is a lot of responsibility for the youngster, but he stepped in and performed admirably last season when called upon.
Will Hutchinson
If Hull FC are looking for a specialised hooker, Hutchinson is the man for the job. However, he’s only played three times for the Black and Whites in 2025 and hasn’t featured since round four back in March. However, he could come onto the bench in a support role and spell alongside Cust or Charles should they get the starting spot. He might have done enough to impress coach John Cartwright to make his first Super League start.
Denive Balmforth
If all else fails, Hull FC could always recall Balmforth from his loan spell at Catalans Dragons. He’s played in three fixtures for the Dragons in as many weeks, including scoring two tries against Warrington Wolves last time out. He’s started on the bench in all three games, with Alrix Da Costa starting instead. However, he could be making his way back over to Hull to replace Bourouh.
