Prince William and Kate Middleton’s love story grew when they married on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London.

The groom made his way into the venue before his bride, as he was joined by his brother and best man, Prince Harry. As they were early, the brothers had a spare moment to greet some of the nearly 2,000 guests in attendance.

It was during this that William made a poignant choice over who he spent time with. William took care to speak with relatives of his late mother, Princess Diana, who had prime seats near the front of Westminster Abbey.

Royal commentator Victoria Murphy reflected on the scene. “William arrived at the wedding some time before his bride, and so he actually had a chance to mingle within Westminster Abbey and talk to some of the guests,” she said.

She continued, “Very notable, I think he went over to Princess Diana’s family, who had a very prominent position right at the front of the Abbey next to the Middleton family, and really spent quite a bit of time talking to them, talking to her sisters.”

Murphy noted the significance of this gesture. “That really feels very representative of how important a part of that day she was, even though she wasn’t there,” she said.

William also shared a poignant three-word comment with Kate on their wedding day. As the Princess of Wales entered Westminster Abbey with her father, Michael Middleton, William and Harry stood by the altar.

Harry glanced back at Kate approaching and whispered to William, “Right, here she is now.” William was delighted to see his bride and told her, “You look lovely. You look beautiful,” as she met him at the altar.

Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton also complimented her, saying, “You look amazing.” Beforehand, as they left the hotel for the Abbey, Michael asked Kate if she was feeling okay.

When they reached the entrance of Westminster Abbey, Michael paused and checked on his daughter once again. She insisted she was doing well, CBS reported at the time.

Kate also shared a sweet comment with her husband following the ceremony as she told him, “You look happy.” The late Queen Elizabeth also described it as an “excellent” wedding.
