The Foreign Office has issued a travel alert for people who are heading to or already in Tenerife, warning of planned industrial action over the Easter bank holiday weekend. With the school holidays well underway and families across the UK jetting off, those travelling to the popular Spanish island have been advised by the government’s foreign affairs department to get in touch with their travel provider for updates.

On Thursday, April 17, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) released advice on Gov.uk for visitors to Tenerife amidst potential disruptions. The alert reads: “Industrial action is planned in the hospitality sector in Tenerife over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

“If you’re due to travel to Tenerife this weekend, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of authorities.” Canarian Weekly reports that the strike action is expected today and tomorrow (April 17 and 18), affecting an estimated 80,000 workers across the hotel industry including in La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, along with Tenerife itself.

Despite ongoing discussions, employees have declined the latest offer proposed by employers’ associations, which included a 6% wage increase, adjustable beds, and setting up a negotiation table to resolve further issues before April 30. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo’s mediation did not lead to a resolution.

The strike is expected to cause significant disruption to the hospitality industry this weekend. Hotel services may be affected, causing inconvenience to travellers, according to the outlet.
