Sheffield Wednesday captain and legend Barry Bannan has been heaped with praise after what he has just done for the club.

Sheffield Wednesday’s difficult summer continues to spring up new difficulties for the club.

With talk of a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday going cold, Dejphon Chansiri’s reign looks set to continue for the time being, which has led to mass player departures.

Both Josh Windass and Michael Smith have left Sheffield Wednesday after their contracts were terminated. Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba were also sold for minimal fees that are far below their market value, indicating that Chansiri is willing to sell to fund the club’s minimal running costs.

As the Championship season looms, a skeleton of a squad remains, with many other players facing uncertainty over their future. Barry Bannan has been left in the dark over his Sheffield Wednesday future, for example, but the Owls man has just done one thing that has further instilled his ‘hero’ status in S6.

Barry Bannan is yet to be handed a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday, despite making it clear that he wishes to continue his stay in Hillsborough.

Many players in his position would, fully understandably, refuse to show up to work if he is not under a contract; however, Bannan continues to show his love for the club and loyalty to the supporters by, not only turning up to training but also helping Sheffield Wednesday’s Community programme.

Recently, Bannan made an appearance at a local school, leading a session that focused on ‘challenging stereotypes and empowering girls through positive conversations and activities’.

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans took to social media to praise the Owls star, with one labelling him as a ‘hero’, whilst another said that he was an ‘incredible human being’.

There were also calls from the supporters to ‘build the statue’ for Bannan, and that was followed up by a fellow fan who said that ‘we need a new word for this man because Legend gets thrown around too easily’.

One Sheffield Wednesday fan highlighted his future uncertainty, which makes his action even more remarkable.

“Baz isn’t even getting paid and he’s still doing the community outreach, unbelievable. Build him the statue.”

Barry Bannan will go down as an Owls legend for how he has handled current situation

We often see players focus on money and their security in their career, something that isn’t necessarily wrong to do, but it is so refreshing to see Barry Bannan put the club ahead of himself.

Bannan has every right, and he would do so with the understanding of fans, to leave the club and find himself another Championship club, where he would still be paid very well for a second-tier player.

However, the fact that Bannan is willing to put himself through this uncertainty in the interest of the club and his desire to remain at Sheffield Wednesday, no further proof is needed to refer to him as a modern legend at Hillsborough Stadium.
