Liverpool’s superstar status where celebrities are concerned can be traced back decades, particularly to the 1960s. In the early 1960s The Beatles became the first rock band to achieve global appeal. In 1964, 70 million people tuned in to watch the Liverpool band on the Ed Sullivan show.
While they were already gaining popularity in the UK at the time, this TV performance would propel them to stardom and open the eyes of the world to the four lads from Liverpool.
The term ‘Beatlemania’ was coined by the mass media to describe the unprecedented appeal of the band to the younger demographic. This was a widespread phenomenon.

Beatlemania was marked by screaming, crying, and hysterical girls. To this day, The Beatles remain one of the most influential and successful bands in pop music history.
The Beatles have a significant and enduring positive impact on Liverpool, both culturally and economically. The Beatles’ global fame has significantly boosted Liverpool’s international profile, making it a globally recognised city.
