British police have arrested more than 100 supporters of the banned pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action at protests in the UK. According to the police, a total of 107 people were arrested in four cities on Saturday.
The protesters held up signs with the words “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” Last week, 72 people had already been arrested at similar protests.
Police said they arrested 55 people at a demonstration outside the British parliament in London and a further nine at a protest march elsewhere in the British capital. Eight people were taken into police custody in Truro in the south-west, and a further 35 at protests in Manchester and Bristol in the south-west. Demonstrations also took place in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.
The ban on Palestine Action came into force on July 5. The government had classified the group as a terrorist organization under a 2000 anti-terrorism law and banned it after members of the group broke into an airbase in southern England and sprayed planes with red paint. Membership or support of the group is now a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
