Tyson Fury was watching closely as Oleksandr Usyk did the double over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium this weekend.
The elite Ukrainian became undisputed in the heavyweight division for a second time when he knocked out Dubois inside five rounds. Though many feel that it would be the perfect time for him to retire, it seems as though Usyk is set to continue with his plan for one final fight before hanging up the gloves.
Speaking the day after the fight on social media, Fury assessed his current rivals, coming to the conclusion that a fight with Anthony Joshua – sought after by many fans – is ‘pointless’ because of how things played out over the last twelve months.
“After watching the boxing last night and reflecting on the situation… You’ve got AJ boxed Daniel Dubois and got ironed out, knocked down five times, flattened. Dubois was on great run – three big knockouts in a row: Joshua, Hrgovic and Miller. And he goes in there and gets absolutely plastered, iced out, by Usyk. It just shows you. ‘Oh the big fight is Fury-AJ.’ AJ got ironed out by Dubois, properly, and Usyk’s just ironed out Dubois. It’s quite pointless.”
‘The Gypsy King’ then revisited the theory, not held by many, that he won both Usyk fights and was robbed on the cards. He believes he is the only heavyweight to be able to beat the Ukrainian, and wants to do it at Wembley next year.
“The only man who’s been able to beat this f***er is myself and been ripped off. I’m not sure what’s going on but it’s GK all day, every day. Still the top dog. Still the top G. Beat him twice and I’ll do it again. Three times. Wembley here we come. Get up.”
Usyk said post-fight that he would be open to a trilogy with Fury, however made it clear that his first priority is rest and time with his family.
