Claressa Shields has claimed to offer Laila Ali a whopping $15million for a generational super-fight – but does she even have the money?

The legendary former champion, whose father is the iconic Muhammad Ali, is 47-years-old and has been retired from boxing for 18 years. Despite this, Shields has been keen to make a super-fight between the pair through her entire career, which her rival has not seemed to have reciprocated.

Ali has recently re-emerged as a figure in the sport with her analysis work on Netflix’s Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano trilogy. And while working that show, she laid out an unattainable goal for promoters to put up $15million in order to get her out of retirement.

Claressa Shields dubiously claims to have $15million offer for Laila Ali

In a video released to TMZ Sports, Claressa Shields claimed that record label Wynn Records were going to put up a $15million purse in order to get Laila Ali out of retirement. But if you look into the video, all is not what it seems.

First of all, there isn’t a recognized fight promoter in the video at all, aside from Shields’ manager Mark Taffet who seems to be the only boxing mind aside from the fighter herself.

Ruben Branson’s Wynn Records claims to have organized the money, but their only proof of this is a novelty cheque from a bank that doesn’t exist at an address that also doesn’t exist.

Taffet claims that they are looking at either Dallas Cowboys Stadium, which can fit as many as 105,000 fans, or T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as fight venues. However, even that offers quite a disparity as T-Mobile can only hold 20,000, which means the scale of the event would be reduced significantly.

“Laila, I’m here with my team. I got some great news for you. We got the $15 million!” Shields boasts in the video, before introducing the comical check. “Let’s make a fight between me and you.

“The best versus the best. The greats versus the greats. The GWOAT versus Muhammad Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali. Let’s make it happen.”

Laila Ali set monstrous price during tongue-in-cheek interview

The $15million price tag was offered up by Ali while speaking with FightHype. Her actual comment noted that the offer of such a monstrous payout would only be the catalyst for a conversation, given how long she has been out of the ring and her general disinterest in a comeback.

“What I heard was that I said ‘unless somebody got $15-20million don’t even call me about this’,” Ali said. “Unless somebody calls me and says they have it, we’re not even going to have a conversation.

“I’m not trying to come back and fight, but if someone offered that kind of money I would actually have to think about it. Do I look like I could fight again? I think so.”

Bloody Elbow has contacted a representative for Ali to see if she has received any more serious offer from Wynn Records or Shields’ team behind the scenes.
