China’s digital landscape continues its rapid expansion, with the number of internet users reaching an impressive 1.12 billion as of June 2025. This was announced by China Internet Network Information Center in its latest report.

This massive user base forms the backbone of China’s burgeoning digital economy, which has become a key driver of innovation and consumption.

The CNNIC report, a biannual statistical survey that has consistently tracked China’s internet development since 1997, details the evolving habits and demographics of this vast online population. Previous reports have indicated that growth in internet users has been increasingly driven by demographic groups such as teenagers and the elderly, with new users often drawn by popular short video and instant messaging platforms.

This extensive connectivity is supported by China’s continuously expanding digital infrastructure, including widespread 5G and broadband coverage across both urban and rural areas. Such robust infrastructure has facilitated the widespread adoption of various online services, transforming daily life and economic activities.
