A marine protection organization has filed a complaint with the country’s fisheries authority seeking stricter protections for endangered species after a restaurant in the popular tourist destination of Halkidiki, northern Greece, was found serving a species of shark whose fishing is supposed to be strictly prohibited.
“More than 60% of shark and ray products on the Greek market are either incorrectly labeled or not labeled at all. This often serves as a cover for the trade of protected species, which are prohibited from being caught and sold,” iSea said in its complaint, noting that the particular restaurant was selling bigeye thresher shark.
The organization spotted the violation on a social media video advertising the restaurant.
