Israeli satellite operator Gilat was awarded approximately US$60mn in orders from the Peruvian government’s telecommunications program Pronatel to upgrade broadband infrastructure in the regions of Apurímac, Huancavelica and Ayacucho.

The modernization, which is expected to take place over the next 12 months, will provide high-speed internet of 200Mbps for nearly 800 public institutions, including schools, health centers and police stations in 280 localities. The service will be delivered over four years, Gilat said in a release.

The broadband projects in the regions began operations in 2019. The project in Apurímac includes providing internet access to 668 public institutions located in 285 localities. The Ayacucho project comprises connectivity to 731 public institutions in 350 population centers while the broadband project for Huancavelica includes 710 public institutions in 354 localities.

In June, Gilat completed the installation and operation of the access network for the Amazonas broadband project and its expansion.

Last year, Gilat was awarded a US$17mn contract for the expansion of the original 2018 project.

The total deployed network includes infrastructure comprising 66 district nodes, 55 intermediate nodes, 146 terminals and 114 free internet access zones in public squares. A digital access center and a network operations center were also installed.

The Amazonas network connects 311 public institutions.

Gilat expects 2025 revenues in Peru of US$45-50mn, down from US$52mn and US$51mn in 2024 and 2023, respectively.
