There has been a big update on the rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr, and it is not good news for fans.

Davis and Roach had been set to clash once again before the end of the year after their first encounter back in March ended in controversy.

The fight itself was declared a split decision draw, although many viewers felt that Roach had done more than enough to have his hand raised and dethrone ‘Tank’ of his WBA world lightweight title.

Davis took a knee in the ninth round, later saying that grease from a recent hair appointment was in his eye, returned to his corner to have his face wiped and then fought on. Bizarrely, referee Steve Willis did not call a knockdown, as per the rules, which would have been crucial on the cards for underdog Roach.

As the boxing world await news on the highly anticipated rematch, which had been pencilled in for August it now appears that the fight may not go ahead as planned, as Roach said on a livestream that he thinks Davis doesn’t actually want to fight him for the second time.

“I ain’t gonna lie, bro, I just think this n***a don’t wanna fight, plain and simple. Remember when I told you all and I tweeted, when I tweeted the whole ‘can’t hold up his end of the [deal]’, we still ain’t get passed that so that s**t getting me mad bro, I’m not gonna lie.”

It is now being reported that Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh is keen to finally make a unification fight between Davis and WBC champion Shakur Stevenson, having recently met with both fighter’s teams, though how Davis’ recent arrest may impact this remains unclear.

In light of this news, ‘The Reaper’ could now be forced to go down a different route, as he sets his sights on becoming a two-weight world champion.
