A motorcyclist who rode the wrong way around a roundabout on a stolen bike to avoid arrest has admitted to a host of driving offences.

Sonny Kennedy, of Hellier Walk, was seen by police officers riding a Husqvarna motorbike, which had been reported as stolen earlier this month, along Winterstoke Road on Monday, July 21.

He did not stop for officers and a chase began.

Kennedy rode the wrong way around a roundabout at Hengrove Way and into oncoming traffic.

He crashed during his escape attempt when he swerved to avoid a vehicle.

Officers stopped the pursuit as a result of Kennedy’s dangerous driving and neighbourhood police officers arrived to arrest him, after administering first aid at the scene.

He was interviewed, charged, and remanded in custody.

The 21-year-old appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 23 and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop for a police officer, for driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a license, and for using a motor vehicle on a public road without third party insurance.

Kennedy was remanded back into custody and is due to be sentenced at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 12. He has been given an interim disqualification from driving.

Sgt Darrell Boothroyd said: “He is a prolific offender who has gone to extreme measures to evade arrest.

“Kennedy put his own life and the lives of innocent members of the public at risk with his dangerous and reckless actions which he has now pleaded guilty to.

“We hope us pursuing this through the courts provides reassurance to the public that we take offences like this incredibly seriously.

“We are committed to protecting the public from people like Kennedy and ensure justice is served against them.”
