As Wales faces another summer of hot weather and rising visitor numbers to its natural spaces, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is calling on the public to protect the environment, respect others, and enjoy the outdoors safely.
With three heatwaves already recorded and more sunny spells expected, Wales’ nature reserves, forests, and national parks are set to be popular destinations for residents and tourists.
However, recent years have seen increased problems including littering, fires, fly-camping, and safety incidents around mountains and water.
Joseph Conran, Lead Specialist Advisor for Outdoor Access and Recreation at NRW, said: “Wales offers such an amazing backdrop for your individual or family adventures… we love to give a ‘croeso cynnes’ (warm welcome) to responsible visitors.
The Countryside Code has been with us for generations as a gentle reminder of how we can respect the places we visit.”
NRW emphasises the importance of planning visits carefully and following the Countryside Code, which applies across countryside, coast, parks, and waterways.
Preventing wildfires is a key concern after an exceptionally dry spring caused a 400% increase in fires.
Visitors are urged not to light campfires, discard cigarettes, or leave litter, especially glass bottles, which can start fires.
BBQs should only be used in designated areas and never during dry spells. NRW also advises booking official campsites instead of fly-camping, which heightens wildfire risk.
Water safety is another priority as warmer weather draws people to open water.
Visitors should check for hidden dangers, currents, and exit points before swimming, never go alone, and remain calm if in difficulty. Waterfalls are especially hazardous due to strong currents and turbulent water.
The safest place to swim outdoors is at lifeguarded beaches between the red and yellow flags. The AdventureSmartUK website offers guidance on open water swimming skills.
