Gerhard Struber insists “the door is open” for Bristol City to make further additions to their squad during the remainder of the summer transfer window, but the Reds’ head coach is adamant the Robins will prioritise the “right” signings over adding needless new faces.
City had a busy start to the summer window following Struber’s appointment as head coach, with all of Adam Randell, Joe Lumley, and Emil Riis arriving at Ashton Gate within the first two weeks of the Austrian’s tenure. However, since Riis’ move was confirmed on June 30, the only movement around Ashton Gate has been outgoing.
Marcus McGuane became the latest player to depart BS3 earlier this week when he completed a permanent move to Huddersfield Town. Even with the midfielder’s exit confirmed, the Reds’ squad remains on the larger side, as demonstrated by the fact that two separate sides will be utilised across this weekend’s double-header of pre-season friendlies.

Steve Lansdown confirmed in an interview during last season’s play-off campaign that the Robins wouldn’t “go wild” in the market this summer, and it was understood, prior to McGuane’s departure at least, that outgoings were a priority for City before further incomings.
In spite of both those points, Struber admits that the Reds are still looking for potential new additions.
“Of course, we look at what’s going on in the market and what’s possible,” the head coach told Bristol Live following Friday’s draw with Cheltenham Town. “I think we see at the moment a team with, I would say, a very, very good quality, but when we find on the market something where we could be in the end a little bit more unpredictable, in all directions, then the door is open.
“We are searching, but we do not have the pressure right now to do something very quickly.
“Of course, we want the right one,” Struber continued. “This is, I think, super important that we are not thinking that we need to bring manpower in, and then in the end we have 30 players. We need the right players, this is super important, from the character, from the mentality, but also, of course, from the quality.
“I think we have a good roster at the moment, but again, we have the eyes and the ears open, and when something knocks on our door, then the door will go open.”
On paper, Struber’s ranks appear to be well stocked in both central midfield and defence. Even without McGuane to call upon, the new head coach has Jason Knight, Adam Randell, Joe Williams, and Max Bird at his disposal, as well as youngsters Adam Murphy and Ruebin Sheppard, who both started in the draw with Cheltenham Town.
In central defence, Rob Dickie, Rob Atkinson, Jamie Knight-Lebel, and Zak Vyner look set to battle it out for a starting role, while Luke McNally will be a contender for a starting position when fit again.

However, the Robins do still look slightly light up front and at wing-back, particularly given the fact that Struber has utilised a front two and a back five throughout pre-season so far.
With Cam Pring set to miss the start of the season through injury and with their being transfer interest in Haydon Roberts, there is a chance that City could be heading into the first weeks of the new campaign with Elijah Morrison as their only recognised, natural, and fit left wing-back.
Similarly, while most supporters expect Riis to lead the line against Sheffield United on the first day of the new season, it is unclear who out of Sinclair Armstrong, Sam Bell, Fally Mayulu, or Harry Cornick would partner him, should Struber opt for a strike partnership.
Although the Robins only have two weeks to make any new additions ahead of their trip to Bramall Lane, the transfer window remains open for more than another month, with deadline day set for September 1.
Only time will tell if the “right one” pops up for the Reds in that time.
