Roy Jones Jr is the latest to weigh in on whether or not Daniel Dubois ‘quit’ against Oleksandr Usyk.
Dubois never managed to get a strong foothold in his undisputed fight with the Ukrainian on July 19 in front of a packed Wembley crowd.
He was picked off with sharp jabs in the first round, then put down early in the fifth round when Usyk’s footwork had dazzled him, and later left him square on for a huge overhand left that sent him to the canvas.
Dubois rose once he had been counted out and walked steadily back to his corner, which has led many to suggest he wasn’t badly hurt and quit, as he was accused of doing in the first fight with Usyk back in August 2023.
Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, Jones Jr was asked if Dubois ‘quit’ in the fight and admitted he thinks the Brit ‘probably’ could have fought on.
“Come on, [Usyk] stopped [Dubois] in first fight with a jab. [Dubois] knows that Usyk knows he probably could have got up off the jab, but he didn’t. So do you think he’s gonna get up off an overhand left? Could he have? Probably, but he shown that’s not the person he is, you know.”
‘DDD’ must now recover and come back stronger if he is to work his way back to another world title. He has done so before after setback losses, which is why many in the sport still believe he has what it takes to be back in the mix with the best.
