Widnes Vikings are working on a deal to sign St Helens youngster Will Roberts. All Out Rugby League understands the youngster is in talks regarding a permanent switch to the Championship club next season, with his deal at Saints to expire at the end of the season.

The 20-year-old halfback has played three games for Widnes this year on a loan basis and the Vikings are now keen to make that deal permanent.

Last year, Roberts signed a one-year contract extension to stay with the Super League club, however, he has yet to make a first-team appearance and with George Whitby emerging under head coach Paul Wellens, Roberts is now exploring first-team opportunities elsewhere.

The early stages of his career have seen him play for Swinton, Rochdale and the Vikings, but a move to Widnes now looks set to be extended in a deal that will see him link up with his brother, Max, who has spent the last three seasons at the club.

Widnes coach Allan Coleman has known the youngster for a long time, revealing previously that he had coached him at community level.

Speaking in June, Roberts said: “He’s a player I’ve watched since he was 6/7 years old. I’ve coached him before, and obviously, he’s Max’s brother.

“He’s a very talented player, with a superb kicking game and a real run threat. He scores a lot of tries as a half, which is something that will be very important for us.

“He’s going to come in and lift us, and I think the fans will see what he’s got to offer this weekend.”
