Sports Writing.- The Spanish women’s foil team composed of María Teresa Díaz, María Mariño, Ariadna Tucker and Andrea Breteau was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Fencing World Championships being held in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, after falling 45-43 to the United States, the second seed.

The American team, composed of Emily Jing, Jaelyn Liu, Lee Kiefer, and Lauren Scruggs; the latter two champion and runner-up, and both team champions in the modality at the Paris Olympic Games; was presented as the favorite, but it wasn’t until the sixth bout that they managed to open some distance by Scruggs winning against Tucker by 5-1.

It was the last of the three victories for the North Americans, who had the same number as the Spanish. In fact, Díaz’s wins over Liu and Mariño’s over Kiefer in the two decisive matches brought their team closer, who were very close to a comeback that would have taken them to the penultimate round.

Previously Spain, which had won against India on the first day, started the second day of competition by eliminating Poland in the round of 16 with a score of 45-25. Tucker was key in the elimination, winning the third and fifth bouts against Karolina Zurawska and Hanna Lyczbinska, accumulating a twelve-point advantage between the two. This allowed the team to face the rest of the face-off in a comfortable situation; which was finally sealed with six victories, one draw and two defeats.
