Move over, pigeons, there’s a new creature taking over St Ann’s Square this weekend, and she’s a huge nine metre long beauty!

Meet Luma, the gentle giant snail gliding her way into the city centre as part of Manchester Museum’s free family programme.

Luma the snail comes to Manchester

Luma

She’s not just big – she’s beautiful, curious, and a little bit magical.

Created by the brilliant minds at creative robotics studio Air Giants, the same team behind the enormous snoozing feline in the Museum’s The Cat That Slept for a Thousand Years exhibition, Luma isn’t your average snail.

Air Giants said: “Luma is a 9m long snail who loves an audience.

“We drew inspiration from the extraordinary range of flexing and contorting motion found in bio-mechanics to give Luma a beautiful movement. Her presence as she looms above visitors is gentle, welcoming and otherworldly.

“Audiences of all ages have instinctive emotional and affectionate reactions to Luma, as well as enjoying the simple spectacle of such a fantastic creature in its own right.”

How does Luma move?

She moves with the help of air flow and takes her cue from the bendy wonders of the natural world, slinking and stretching with elegant, hypnotic grace.

And while she might look like she’s come from a dream, Luma is here to make connections. Designed to interact with humans, this gentle giant responds to touch and movement, making every encounter unique.

She’s part robot, part artwork, and all heart.

Luma is a joyful and hopeful work which champions both nature and technology, and
reimagines what robots can be for.
