New data reveals an increasing interest in Wales among first-time buyers stepping onto the property ladder.[1] To support them with their first move, housebuilder Dandara is making homeownership more attainable through the Help to Buy Wales scheme at its Golwg Gwendraeth development.

The Help to Buy Wales scheme is a government initiative designed to assist prospective buyers in purchasing new-build properties by offering equity loans. Particularly beneficial for first-time buyers, Dandara is offering eligible homes under the scheme at development Golwg Gwendraeth in Carway.

In December 2024, the Welsh Government announced an extension of the Help to Buy Wales scheme, now expected to run until September 2026. Originally set to close in March 2025, the 18-month extension aims to provide continued support for homebuyers and the housing market. While England explores alternative ways to support first-time buyers, Wales is giving people a clearer route onto the ladder.

The scheme is open to first-time buyers and existing homeowners purchasing a new-build home priced up to £300,000. A 5% deposit is required, with the Welsh Government providing an equity loan of up to 20% of the property’s value – interest-free for the first five years of the mortgage.

Sara Taylor, Sales Director at Dandara Wales & West, commented: “We understand how challenging it can be for first-time buyers in Wales to get onto the property ladder. That’s why we are proud to be a registered housebuilder playing a part in helping those take the first step onto the ladder by offering eligible homes through the Help to Buy Wales scheme.

“Help to Buy Wales has proven highly successful across our developments in Carway with buyers taking advantage of the scheme to purchase their new homes with us. We expect this number to grow with the recent extension, which underlines the Welsh Government’s commitment to supporting homeownership.”

The scheme has assisted over 14,000 households in achieving homeownership since launching in 2014. Its extension provides stability to more than 50 developers and small businesses registered with the programme.

Lili Millward at Cascade Mortgages, commented: “Help to Buy Wales remains an invaluable support for first-time buyers. It not only makes homeownership more attainable with manageable repayments but also gives buyers the confidence to invest in a home they can truly grow into, rather than settling for something temporary.”
