Emotional doctor tells Trump envoy to come to his hospital to see starvation in Gaza
An emotional US doctor working in Gaza has told Sky News that Donald Trump’s envoy visiting the region should come to his hospital to see the true extent of starvation in the enclave.
Paediatrician Dr Tom Adamkiewicz, who is working at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, says claims a famine isn’t unfolding in the enclave are “an absolute lie”.
The doctor from Atlanta says: “This is absolutely not true, because I’ve seen that with my own eyes.
“And I would like to have Mr Witkoff come here and talk to me, to my face, and I’ll show him, okay?
“Mr Witkoff, just come here right now.
“In fact, I’ll meet you in the deconflicted area outside of the hospital, and I will escort you into the hospital. I’ll meet you there in person.”
His words come after the leading global authority on food scarcity, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, warned this week that a “worst-case scenario” of famine was unfolding in Gaza.
“I’ve been here for three days now and it’s very hard to explain what’s going on here,” Adamkiewicz says.
The “majority of people” he has seen in the hospital gave signs of malnutrition.
“Many children are passing out literally during the day and injuring themselves,” he says. “These children are suffering from extreme severe malnutrition because there’s a combination of the chronic illness and malnutrition.”
He also described the inflated food prices in Gaza, with 1kg of meat or sugar costing “a hundred dollars”: “This is an absolutely inhumane situation.”
Adamkiewicz says one boy he’d seen in the hospital had been shot, with the bullet going in his hip and out his shoulder, leaving him paralysed.
