Tom Brady in a Birmingham City kit

From Sunderland ‘Til I Die and Welcome to Wrexham to All Or Nothing and Ted Lasso, TV has fallen in love with football recently. And, as any Blues fan will tell you, you couldn’t have written a better script than Birmingham City’s last few seasons. Luckily, camera crews were there to capture it all for Built In Birmingham: Brady & the Blues.

The five-part docuseries, which dropped today (Friday, August 1), follows the takeover of Birmingham City by US businessman Tom Wagner and former NFL quarterback Tom Brady—who laid down an early mission statement: “We’re trying to make Birmingham City a world-class team.” But as they say, the best laid plans of mice and men…

With executive producer Steven Knight on board, Built In Birmingham: Brady & the Blues was always a guaranteed success. But relegation, multiple managerial changes (including a cameo from an England legend), and a record-breaking season that returned them to the Championship make it a gripping watch.

Camera crews followed the first-team, coaching staff and key ownership figures throughout the day-to-day football operations. One moment caught on camera sees Tom Brady criticise then manager Wayne Rooney: “I’m a little worried about our head coach’s work ethic… I mean, I don’t know, I don’t have great instincts on that.”

Built in Birmingham isn’t just about the football club; it’s as much about its supporters and the city itself. There are also suggestions that the series will be getting a season 2, following the 2025/2026 season, if this one is a success—only shining more of a light on the club and the city.
