Ukrainian forces have made notable progress in the eastern part of Staromayorske, Donetsk region, reclaiming tactically important positions amid intensified Russian offensive actions across the frontline, according to the bulletin from the The Institute for the Study of War published on July 31.
“Ukrainian forces had partial success east of Staromayorske and forced Russian troops to retreat from certain positions,” the General Staff reported. The statement highlighted ongoing local counteroffensive efforts along the Mokri Yaly River axis.
This development contrasts with Russian gains elsewhere. ISW confirmed in its July 31 assessment that Russian forces have made confirmed territorial advances near Avdiivka and north of Donetsk City.
In particular, geolocated footage published on July 30 shows Russian troops advancing southwest of Novokalynove and pushing towards the Avdiivka Coke Plant.

The ISW also observed continued Russian offensive operations near Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, and the Siversk salient, supported by sustained aviation and artillery strikes.

Despite tactical setbacks in some areas, Ukraine continues to conduct targeted counterattacks and drone strikes along the front, aiming to limit Russian consolidation. The General Staff’s update emphasized ongoing combat engagements near Urozhaine, Robotyne, and Klishchiivka.
Ukraine’s Defense Forces reiterated their commitment to reclaiming occupied territories. The July 31 bulletin concluded with the assertion that “combat operations are ongoing, and the situation remains under control.”
Earlier, it was reported about the destruction of a Russian BM‑21 Grad multiple rocket launcher by Ukrainian border guards near the Donetsk frontline on July 2, as reflected in localized defensive efforts in the same region where operations around Staromaiorske are ongoing.
