Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street star Jane Hazlegrove has opened about her character Bernie Winter’s secret wedding agenda.
This week on the ITV soap will see Bernie head down to aisle to marry Dev Alahan in a quickly-organised wedding, and he has no idea why she’s decided to go through with it so quickly.
Dev’s son Aadi staged a robbery at the corner shop to try and deal with mounting debts, only to realise there was no insurance. By secretly doing the wedding on the cheap, Bernie is hoping to use Auntie Rani’s money set for the big day to pay off the debt instead.
Hazlegrove has explained that Bernie genuinely does love Dev and that “it’s a dream for her to marry this fabulous, handsome man”, but that it’s just the rushed and cut-price nature of it that has to do with her latest scheme.

When asked if she believes Bernie can pull it off, Hazlegrove stated: “I think she’s pretty confident in all her hare-brained schemes really, she doesn’t always see the consequences or the end result.
“I think she’s confident she can pull it off. She’s pretty optimistic, she’s got to be because she does come out with some interesting things and lurch from one mad, hare-brained scheme to another, but she genuinely thinks they can pull it off.”
Another option would be to tell Dev the truth, but that’s not something that crosses her mind, with Hazlegrove explaining: “I don’t think that’s a viable option. It’s a case of once you start swimming out… [you’re] so far away from the shore that there’s no turning back.
“It’s not about her being secretive to Dev, she’s just trying to protect Aadi because he has made an absolute hash of things, hasn’t he? Bernie’s made enough mistakes herself and will always fight for the underdog, bless her.”

While Bernie may have a secret agenda on her mind, Hazlegrove did confirm that her character was very much smitten with Dev, sharing: “This has been a love affair that’s been going on for a long time, her and Dev have propped each other up through quite a few things.
“He’s been a massive support to her. She’s absolutely nuts about Dev. He’s kind to her and I don’t think she’s had a lot of kindness from men over the years, she’s quite a complicated character and is very impulsive. But this is definitely an affair of the heart. It’s all genuine.”
Of course, we already know that the wedding ceremony itself is going to take a dramatic turn, but thankfully it’s not going to end in death.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX and YouTube.
