A man was rescued from a stretch of canal in Manchester city centre in an operation involving police and the fire service.

He was subsequently taken to hospital with a head injury.

Emergency services were called to Tariff Street in the city centre at around 11.30pm on Saturday night. The road runs over a stretch of the Rochdale canal near Piccadilly Marina, overlooked by the Dakota Hotel.

Specialist firefighters and rescue units were also scrambled to the scene.

Firefighters used throw lines to reach and rescue the man and he was passed into the care of paramedics.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said the rescue operation lasted for around 45 minutes.

The spokesperson said: “At shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday (August 2) two fire engines from Manchester central fire station, the water incident unit from Eccles fire station plus the enhanced rescue unit from Ashton fire station assisted Greater Manchester Police with the rescue of one man from a canal off Tariff Street in Manchester city centre.

“Firefighters used throw lines to rescue the man before handing them to the care of north west ambulance service.

“Crews were in attendance for around 45 minutes.”

No further details have been provided and no age for the man has been given.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the man was taken to hospital, where he’s being treated for a head injury.

The force’s officers were first on the scene and worked with the fire service to rescue him.

A GMP spokesperson confirmed an investigation was underway into the incident to determine how and why he came to be in the canal.
