Hull FC winger Lewis Martin has had a standout season for the club, but rugby league fans are debating whether he should be included in Shaun Wane’s England squad at the end of the season.
As of round 20, he sits third in the Super League try-scoring charts on sixteen, two behind leader Jai Field and one behind Mikey Lewis, making him the highest-scoring winger across the league.
He also has the most carries in the league and is the fifth-highest metre maker too, giving him all the right attributes to be in the conversation to be one of Wane’s starting England wingers.
However, at just 20, is it too early to talk about an England debut this season for the Hull FC winger, or should he be given another couple of years to work on his defensive game?
Here are some of the best comments from our Facebook page and across social media.
Rugby league fans debate if Lewis Martin should be in contention for England spot
Tom Denton: Being a winger in the modern day, you have to take the ball up a lot. You look at Johnstone, Marshall, Burgess, Davies, and how much they take the ball up. I like Martin, he’s a great finisher and has pace to burn, but can he take the ball up like ones mentioned above. Definitely one for the future, though.
Gary Ede: As a Hull KR fan, I honestly think this kid should be involved in the squad. Yes, he’s only young, but he’s one hell of a talent.
Shaun Michael: He’s definitely one for the future, but nowhere near international level. Great finisher, but still defensively vulnerable, and has not got the physical presence yet to do hard yards out of defence. Hope he does make it eventually.
Brian Thompson: He’s a great talent for sure, but perhaps a bit early to pitch him in against the Aussies?
Ryan Underwood: Too soon. Can score tries, but needs to work on yardage from the back field, which is needed at the international level.
J Osborne: Give the lad a couple of hard pre-seasons in the gym and watch him get bigger, stronger, and faster. He’s a future international, don’t knock the kid from a Hull KR fan.
Dave Petty: Let’s not rush him. Still needs a bit of nurturing, but the way he is going, he will be up there with the Ryan Halls of the world.
Shaun Langton: Yes. think he’s earned a shot on his form, and Wane claimed he was going to pick players on form. I’m a Hull KR fan, and Davies and Burgess are pressing also.
Chris Haselden: He is a very good finisher when the line is in front of him, but he doesn’t take the ball in well enough yet from a defensive position; he gets pinged back a lot.
Gary Robins: Think he should certainly be in the training squad. From a Rovers supporter.
