Manchester United target Morten Hjulmund has already has made his feelings clear on Ruben Amorim, having worked with him at Sporting CP. The Denmark international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, as the Reds attempt to strengthen in midfield.

Hjulmand, 26, signed for Sporting from Lecce for £15.8million in August 2023 and has impressed since his move to Lisbon. The ex-Admira Wacker man helped Amorim’s side win the Primeira Liga in his first season in Portugal and he followed that up with another league title triumph in the last campaign.

His performances have caught the eye of several clubs across Europe, including Juventus, Manchester City and Tottenham. However, United are determined to win the race for his signature. Indeed, the Reds sent a £34m bid to Sporting for Hjulmand last Monday, according to Calciomercato.

Amorim, who left Sporting to replace Erik ten Hag as United’s new permanent head coach in November, is said to be keen on reuniting with Hjulmand at Old Trafford. The midfielder has a £68m release clause in his Sporting contract but his valuation is expected to be much less than that figure.

Should Hjulmand make the move to United, he would work alongside Amorim again and that is something that the Sporting man wouldn’t appear to be against. Speaking after Amorim decided to join United, Hjulmand heaped praise on the Portuguese and admitted he was “sad” at the decision.

“It was also difficult for me to hear,” Hjulmand admitted at the time. “I was sad that Ruben is leaving me and leaving Sporting. It is a great opportunity. I hope that Ruben is proud of himself for getting an offer like this.”

“Of course, Ruben was one of the reasons why I came to Sporting,” Hjulmand added. “When you work with Ruben you see a clear picture. That was important when I joined Sporting – first to understand how he plays.

“The way that he manages the team inside the pitch and outside the pitch as well is not like I anything I have seen in my short career. I think Manchester [United] are in good hands with Ruben.”

It’s clear that Hjulmand would be open to reuniting with Amorim at United and he would be an astute addition. Clearly knows the system inside out and wouldn’t take him long to bed into his approach.
