An investigation has been launched following an incident where a motorist “deliberately” rammed into a Garda car in Louth, inflicting damage on the law enforcement vehicle.
At around 8:30pm on Saturday, August 3, members of the Louth Roads Policing unit were on patrol as part of the Garda Bank Holiday weekend road safety operation when they were involved in a serious incident.
Throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend, Gardaí have been carrying out a targeted traffic enforcement operation which started at 7am on Thursday, July 31 and is set to run until 7am on Wednesday, August 6.
While on duty in the Ravensdale area, just north of Dundalk, Gardaí spotted a grey Northern Ireland registered Audi A4 behaving in a manner that raised suspicion.
The driver of the Audi A4 intentionally collided with the Roads Policing patrol car when an attempt was made to pull the vehicle over, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of the Gardaí, reports the Irish Mirror.
Fortunately, no Gardaí sustained physical injuries, and the investigation is ongoing. The Gardaí have stated they are “working closely” with their counterparts in the PSNI to track down those responsible and are calling for witnesses to come forward.
A Garda spokesperson said: “If you witnessed anything suspicious in the Ravensdale area around 8.30pm – or have any information that may assist- please contact Dundalk Garda Station on 0429388400 or call 999 in an emergency
“Our Roads Policing Units remain on patrol across the region focused on keeping people safe. Your support is vital and very much appreciated”.
