Merseyside business Applied Nutrition could expand its premises into a huge new facility. A planning application submitted to Knowsley Council states an aim to build a 83,200 sq ft unit on Knowsley Industrial Park, opposite the firm’s base.

The application was submitted by Ryder and Granite Estates and, if approved, the site would be leased to the sports nutrition company to expand its operations. The facility would be built on 5.6 acres of land at the business park, found off Acornfield Road in Kirkby.

According to planning documents, the proposed building will feature: “A modern office spaces for operational and administrative functions, fronts the staff carpark and Acornfield Road. Provision for the business’ offices, meeting spaces, as well as a staff room and gym to support staff well-being.

“A 72,000 sq ft warehouse space is proposed to accommodate high-bay storage racking system for bulk product storage and order fulfilment.

“An access road, suitable for HGV use, runs along the southern site boundary to provide access to the goods-in yard. Accommodating a marshalling area and dedicated HGV loading bays for inbound and outbound logistics.”

Tom Ryder set up the company Advanced Nutrition in 2014, having run a sports nutrition shop in Kirkby and worked in wholesale.

More than a decade on, the company’s products are now found in more than 80 countries, it is backed by JD Sports and supported by famous names including Coleen Rooney, Huyton-born Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett, legendary cyclist Bradley Wiggins, as well as football clubs Glasgow Rangers and Fulham.

In 2024, the company began trading on the London Stock Exchange’s main market with a valuation of around £350m.

Summarising the application, a planning document states: “The proposed development is for a modern, sustainable warehouse facility, with ample parking and hard-standing within a highly accessible location.

“The development design is of high quality, within an industrial setting creating opportunities for employment. Careful consideration has been given to layout, siting, and access within and around the development, to ensure secure and safe usage/everyday working.

“The proposed distribution centre will provide a high-quality, sustainable, and functional facility to support Applied Nutrition’s growth.

“The development aligns with local and national economic objectives, enhances employment opportunities, and strengthens Knowsley Industrial Estate’s status as a key logistics hub.”

The application was validated on July 18, 2025. It is awaiting a decision from the local authority.
