The Good Friday Walk of Witness in Handsworth marked its 20th anniversary this year with Christians from around the city taking part

Hundreds of people took part in a symbolic walk in Birmingham this Easter, which marked a milestone anniversary this year.

Christians from churches in the city gathered to take part in the Good Friday Walk of Witness in Handsworth on April 18.

The walk, now in its 20 th year, is organised by Handsworth & District Christian Outreach (HDCO).

It saw local church members and the community gather to retrace the final steps of Jesus Christ ‘as a symbolic act of remembrance and outreach’.

The event began at Beacon Church in Sandwell Road at 12:30pm.

It then saw people walk along Holyhead Road and Soho Road, pausing outside Cannon Street Baptist Church for one of two breaks and speeches.

Free samosas and water were handed out, with everyone invited to take part in the ‘peaceful and meaningful expression of Christian faith.

The walk continued to the DWP building in Soho Road, with the event due to end at 3.30pm, when hot soup will be served to the community.

Pastor Bryan Scott, chair of HDCO, said: “This is a gathering of believers from all backgrounds.”

“It remembers the significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and extending that message of love to the heart of the Handsworth community.”
