Sheffield United kick-start the new 2025/26 Championship season with a home clash against Bristol City this weekend.

Sheffield United overcame their upcoming opponents in the play-offs at the semi-final stage in the last campaign. However, SUFC were beaten in the final by Sunderland at Wembley.

The Blades subsequently made the decision to part ways with Chris Wilder. He was replaced by Ruben Selles following the Spaniard’s sacking by fellow Championship side Hull City.

Selles, 41, has managed the likes of Southampton and Reading. He managed to keep the Tigers up in the second tier last term on the final day on goal difference after joining them in December before he was given the chop.

Sheffield United have delved into the transfer market so far this summer to bring in the likes of Tyler Bindon and Louie Barry on loan from Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa respectively, among others. They have the chance to bring in some more new faces before the end of the window on Monday 1st September.

The Blades have also cut ties with key pair Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic recently. They will be hoping that they can keep hold of influential midfielder Gustavo Hamer. Palmeiras are one of a couple of clubs who have been linked with a swoop for him.

Sheffield United team news

As per The Star, Sheffield United are without Oliver Arblaster, Tom Davies and Jamie Shackleton. However, defender Jack Robinson has returned to training. Selles has said: “It has been standard with ups and downs in pre-season, but the squad is fit. Jack is back training with us, he can be ready for the game. I think [he is in a position to potentially start]. He made the last couple of trainings and he is in the condition. So if I decide for him to play or be in the squad, he will be happy with that and give us everything.”

Sheffield United starting XI

Sheffield United’s number one Michael Cooper remains at Bramall Lane. He joined around 12 months from Plymouth Argyle and has been a hit in South Yorkshire.

Femi Seriki and Harrison Burrows will look to get up and down the flanks of defence. Robinson should get the nod if he is fit enough to start, whilst Bindon will be eager to show what he can do on his competitive debut.

Hamer and Sydie Peck are the most likely central midfield partnership, with Callum O’Hare just in front of them. Andre Brooks will look to cause Bristol City issues with his pace.

Barry worked under Selles at Hull City last term and will look to make an impact. Tyrese Campbell may lead the line, with Tom Cannon on the bench following Kieffer Moore’s exit to newly promoted Wrexham.
