Gainsborough Care Home received a “good” rating in the categories of overall, safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

“Good” means the service is performing well and meeting the expectations of the CQC and is the second highest rating a care home can receive below “outstanding”.

The service closed temporarily after the an 86-year-old woman and two men, aged 74 and 91 died on October 23, 2024.

The care home reopened in January before a police investigation into the care home was conducted in May.

Dorset Police ruled out the presence of carbon monoxide as the cause of death.

The investigation confirmed two of the residents died from natural causes and the third died from “long-term health complications relating to catheterisation overseen by healthcare services”.

The report from the CQC found the service had a “proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty” and “lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice”.

The report added the inspection saw “mostly” kind interactions between staff and people in the care home and that there were no concerns with how residents were presented.

It said: “People were cared for safely and learning was taken from accidents and incidents and used to minimise future risks.

“Referrals were made to external agencies such as safeguarding and to healthcare professionals.

“We found some areas of medicines administration practice needed to be improved; however, we found no evidence of impact on people as a result of this.”

The inspection also praised the shared direction and culture of the care home based upon “transparency, equity, equality and human rights, diversity and inclusion, engagement, and understanding challenges and the needs of people and their communities”.

One family member of one of the residents said of the staff were “welcoming and professional” and added they were “competent and well trained”.

A short-term aim of the service was to increase numbers of people using the service to enable it to become the” homely service” it had been before closure.
